Farmers Market

Trifon Trifonov

Trifon Trifonov is a saxophonist and clarinetist whose deep connection to Bulgarian folk music brings a unique flavor to every note he plays.

Born in 1952, Trifon’s musical journey has been shaped by the rich traditions of his homeland, Bulgaria. His playing is heavily inspired by the legendary Bulgarian violinist Ianko Petrov, and he is a master of several traditional instruments, including the Bulgarian bagpipe, or gaida.

Trifon joined Farmers Market in 1995, replacing Håvard Lund after an unforgettable one-hour phone audition, arranged by his colleague Borislav Zgourowski. His distinctive style and deep knowledge of Bulgarian wedding music made him a perfect fit for the band’s adventurous blend of Balkan rhythms and jazz.

In addition to his work with Farmers Market, Trifon has collaborated with artists such as Kaizers Orchestra and has contributed to numerous recordings in Bulgaria, including with Ivo Papasov. He remains a highly respected figure in Bulgarian music, regularly appearing on international compilations of folk music.

When he's not on stage or in the studio, Trifon is tending to his peppermint crops in Katonitze, a small town outside Plovdiv, where his passion for music is only rivaled by his love for the land.
